ChatGPT and the Future of HR: Streamlining Document Creation

ChatGPT—this time, those 'revolutionary' predictions are for real

Artificial intelligence or AI was supposed to change the world, business, and human resources, but it hasn’t happened yet. Why? The answer is quite simple: just like VCRs, it was difficult to program and use machines learning models effectively. However, the emergence of large language models like ChatGPT is changing everything. The ChatGPT model algorithm is already built, and based on written language, it can work anywhere we need to use written language, and using them is super easy. The ChatGPT model can predict the next words in a sentence based on the enormous canon of the written word, and it can write poems, essays, business letters, and college essays remarkably well.

In the field of HR, these LLM or large language models can automate cover letters, job application questions, performance appraisals, legal briefs, and customized responses to questions from employees about HR policies. It won't be original, but it will be appropriate and competent. However, most of the work in HR involves other things besides writing documents, so only some parts of the job can be automated by ChatGPT. In other areas like computer programming, these LLM programs can look over billions of pieces of computer code and write code to solve a programmer's problem or complete a program where they are stuck. The result will be an increase in productivity, but it also means we will need fewer people in those jobs.

While productivity will improve, the big concern is that if you’re not writing, you’re not thinking in the same way. For example, students write essays to force themselves to organize their thinking, confront the evidence and figure out what they really believe. However, if ChatGPT writes your proposal or report, you will miss out on the analytical process that comes with writing. Although, we can say ChatGPT is a game-changer, it’s imperative to recognize that it has implications that we haven’t considered yet.
