ChatGPT AI faces scrutiny by European Data Protection Board

European national privacy body forms ChatGPT taskforce - FinTech

The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has established a dedicated task force to fortify cooperation and exchange information regarding possible enforcement actions by data protection authorities in response to privacy violations by the artificial intelligence (AI) platform, ChatGPT. The announcement followed ChatGPT's recent temporary ban in Italy and subsequent investigations in Spain and France due to concerns over data breaches and privacy issues. Germany's data protection commissioner also indicated possible measures following the Italian authorities' ruling, while JP Morgan and Klarna have both taken steps to ban or unplug the tool.

The ChatGPT taskforce initiative by the EDPB marks a movement towards reinforcing privacy policies in the AI industry. The watchful eye of regulatory bodies underscores the importance of prioritizing user privacy to ensure the ethical development and use of AI.

According to Finextra, "The EDPB members discussed the recent enforcement action undertaken by the Italian data protection authority against OpenAI about the ChatGPT service. The EDPB decided to launch a dedicated task force to foster cooperation and to exchange information on possible enforcement actions conducted by data protection authorities."

It is imperative that the development and implementation of AI technologies aligns with national and global privacy regulations, safeguarding the rights of individuals and ensuring responsible innovation.
