Skyrim mod allows chatting with NPCs using ChatGPT

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, released over a decade ago, still remains a popular game due to its vast and dedicated modding community. Players have been able to expand their world and stories for countless more hours of fun by installing new items, quests, areas, and much more. Bethesda has even supported this community through several game re-releases. Now, modder Art of the Machine has developed a mod named ChatGPT, which allows NPCs to communicate and interact with players like never before.

The mod is still under development, and the AI-generated voices still sound artificial due to the lack of voice actors. However, it could make Skyrim more immersive than ever before once refined. Using text-to-speech software, players can ask NPCs questions in the game, and the AI responds (provided that it’s within their knowledge). For instance, players can ask shopkeepers what time they close for the night, and the AI informs them that they’ll be closing soon. Additionally, NPCs react to in-game items, telling players information about the weapons and what they are capable of doing.

The mod includes a basic memory system, which will allow the AI to remember previous conversations or events, leading to more interesting interactions further down the line. Since AI generation keeps improving, technology similar to this will likely be incorporated into future game design. This mod and others like it can keep Skyrim interesting until Bethesda shares details on the upcoming sequel, The Elder Scrolls VI.
