Apple executive Phil Schiller joins OpenAI as board observer
At the annual developer conference, Apple's Phil Schiller has reportedly joined OpenAI's board as an observer. OpenAI, a non-profit organization known for developing AI such as 'ChatGPT', recently went through a series of events that included the sudden resignation of then-CEO Sam Altman.
The incident was later revealed to be a 'coup' by the board of directors, although Altman returned to his position within two weeks.
During this time, Microsoft, a partner of OpenAI, expressed interest in welcoming Altman and others to the company.
In January 2024, Dee Templeton, a vice president at Microsoft, was sent as an observer to the OpenAI board of directors. Observers like Templeton and now Schiller attend board meetings without voting rights or directorship powers, providing insight into the decision-making process.
With Apple appointing Phil Schiller as an observer, the OpenAI board now includes representatives from both Microsoft and Apple, two companies with a history of rivalry and partnership.
This development has raised questions about the dynamics within the board, as noted by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
Both Apple and OpenAI have chosen not to comment on Schiller's new role as an observer.
