AI 'Prompt Engineer' Jobs Pay Up To $375,000 Annually

The growing demand for generative AI tools has given rise to "prompt engineer" jobs that can pay as high as $375,000 per year. These engineers train AI chatbots to improve their responses, and the positions don't always require a tech degree.

Anthropic, an artificial intelligence research and safety firm, currently has an open role for a "prompt engineer and librarian," paying between $280,000 and $375,000 per year, according to Bloomberg. Applicants with basic programming skills and a high level of familiarity with large language models can apply.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, which developed ChatGPT, has stressed the need for prompt engineers, calling it "an amazingly high-leverage skill." Many recruiters have noted that the role is in high demand, with expert prompt engineers able to name their price.

However, while the market for prompt engineers is rapidly expanding, some experts warn that it may not be the job of the future. Ethan Mollick, a professor at the Wharton School, tweeted that he has a strong suspicion that it won't be a big deal in the long run. Adrian Weller, a director of research in machine learning at the University of Cambridge, also warned that prompt engineering is evolving quickly.

Despite these cautions, prompt engineering is a promising career for people without a tech background. The prompt marketplace PromptBase, which launched last June, allows freelancers to sell their prompts and for businesses to hire prompt engineers.
