ChatGPT vs Gemini Deep Research: Which AI Agent Is Better ...
OpenAI and Google are currently in a race to provide the best Deep Research agent. Gemini’s Deep Research agent utilizes the new Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking model while ChatGPT’s Deep Research agent is based on a fine-tuned version of the o3 model. It is worth noting that Google offers its agent for free, whereas OpenAI charges $20. To evaluate both agents, we conducted a series of tests to see how they perform.
Research on China’s AI Field
For the initial test, we tasked both the Deep Research agents in ChatGPT and Gemini to delve into China’s advancements in the AI sector. The ChatGPT Deep Research agent took 10 minutes, analyzed 30 sources, and produced a 9,000-word report. Meanwhile, Gemini’s Deep Research agent completed the task in 8 minutes, delivering a concise 3,000-word report sourced from over 170 websites.
Upon reviewing the reports, it was evident that ChatGPT’s Deep Research agent failed to acknowledge China’s recent AI progress, missing crucial advancements like DeepSeek R1 and new models from Baidu. In contrast, Gemini’s report provided updated insights, showcasing a startup called DeepSeek and its innovative R1 model.
Comparison on AI Chips and GPUs
Next, we challenged the ChatGPT and Gemini Deep Research agents to investigate the future of specialized AI chips compared to Nvidia GPUs. While ChatGPT explored 22 sources in detail, Gemini’s analysis extended to over 100 web pages, albeit in a more concise format.
Both agents highlighted the emergence of TPUs, ASICs, FPGAs, and new silicon companies like Groq and Cerebras. However, ChatGPT missed vital updates on Google’s latest TPU v6e chip, indicating a lag in current information.
Insights on Obesity Management
In the third task, we explored obesity management in 2025 with both ChatGPT and Gemini’s Deep Research agents. While ChatGPT provided a detailed account based on high-quality sources and medical journals, Gemini’s report stood out for its mention of upcoming drug trials and new interventions like the triple hormone receptor.

Overall, Gemini’s Deep Research AI agent excelled in delivering up-to-date information across various topics, whereas ChatGPT’s broader coverage was hindered by its limited access to the latest developments. Gemini’s shift to the Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking model has significantly enhanced its capabilities.
Final Thoughts
Although ChatGPT’s ability to incorporate uploaded files offers a unique advantage, Gemini’s consistent delivery of current insights makes it a preferred choice. Additionally, Gemini’s free accessibility compared to OpenAI’s paid model adds to its appeal. While ChatGPT showcases depth in its reports, its reliance on outdated sources presents a drawback.
In conclusion, leveraging Gemini’s Deep Research AI agent for current and comprehensive information proves to be more beneficial in various research scenarios.
