A glimpse into the robotic future of video games

ChatGPT Skyrim Mod Is A Robotic Horror Movie

AI technology has been making significant strides in video games. Big companies like Ubisoft and Square Enix have been testing AI integration in their games, but the ChatGPT mod for Skyrim seems to take it to the next level. The mod uses ChatGPT, xVASynth, and Whisper to enable conversations with non-playable characters (NPCs) in the game through text-to-speech and speech-to-text technology. The mod also introduces Skyrim scripting, which allows NPCs to have in-game awareness and lip syncing.

However, the practical application of this mod seems to be quite a horror show, as depicted in a video by YouTuber, Art from the Machine. The video shows a sped-up conversation with an NPC, which highlights the slow response time of the game and terrible synthesised voice acting. The bland and generic dialogue, as well as the NPCs' awareness of in-game events, make for a robotic and eerie experience.

It is understandable to see the potential appeal of this mod considering that it could create a tabletop RPG with friends. However, the writing generated by machine learning leaves a lot to be desired, and if this is the future of video games, it is a dystopian one. It is essential to recognize the value of human art as the true human experience.
