Google Begins Adding AI Assistant Gemini to Gmail

Google has announced that it is incorporating its artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, Gemini, into the side panel of Gmail. This new feature rollout, available on both web and mobile platforms, commenced on Monday, June 24. The company detailed the update in a recent blog post.

Enhanced Functionality for Google Workspace Customers

The AI assistant will cater primarily to Google Workspace customers who have access to the Gemini Business and Enterprise add-on, the Gemini Education and Education Premium add-on, and Google One AI Premium. This recent introduction comes on the heels of the successful integration of Gemini into Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, and Google Drive.

With Gemini now embedded in Gmail on the web, users can leverage its capabilities to summarize email threads, suggest responses, draft emails, and extract specific information from emails or Google Drive files directly within their inbox.

Increased Efficiency and User-Friendly Features

According to Google, the AI assistant in Gmail offers proactive prompts to assist users in various tasks. In addition to the suggested responses, users can ask Gemini freeform questions like retrieving specific information or details from previous communications.

The AI assistant is expected to enhance user productivity and streamline email management tasks.

Expanding the Capabilities of Gemini

During the Google I/O developer conference in May, Google revealed its plans to further enhance Gemini, allowing users to create a virtual teammate using AI technology. This AI-powered virtual team member is intended to seamlessly integrate with Google Workspace, offering personalized task management, project monitoring, data organization, insights provision, trend detection, and support for collaborative efforts.
