Data watchdog to keep Meta AI features under review
Meta has made an announcement regarding the European launch of artificial intelligence (AI) features on various platforms including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. This innovative technology will be introduced in the form of an AI chatbot assistant designed to interact with users across Meta's messaging applications.
Monitoring by Data Protection Commission
The Irish Data Protection Commission shared that it has been closely monitoring Meta AI in collaboration with other EU data oversight bodies. They have committed to continuously assess the implementation of these features as they are gradually introduced to users in the upcoming weeks.
Graham Doyle, Deputy Commissioner at the DPC, expressed concerns regarding WhatsApp and emphasized the need for further clarification. WhatsApp reassured users that Meta AI can only access messages that are willingly shared with it, and that all personal messages are encrypted end-to-end for privacy.
Regulatory Environment Challenges
Last year, Meta faced challenges in rolling out specific AI models in the EU due to regulatory uncertainties. The decision was made to pause utilizing personal data for AI training following discussions with the Irish DPC.
Despite these obstacles, Meta is set to launch Meta AI across 41 European countries, including EU member states. The initial phase will introduce an intelligent chat function, marking the beginning of Meta's efforts to introduce advanced AI technologies in Europe.
Future Expansion and Collaboration
Meta affirmed its commitment to collaborating with regulators to ensure that European users benefit from the full potential of Meta AI. The company plans to expand its AI offerings in Europe gradually, aiming to provide a similar experience to users in the US.
Looking forward, the focus will be on introducing Meta AI's chat function in multiple European languages in the near future and expanding its capabilities over time.
