TikTok Becomes First Social Network to Auto Label AI-Generated Content
This week, TikTok announced that it has implemented a new feature where AI-generated content produced on third-party platforms will now be automatically labeled. This move aims to prevent any confusion or misinformation caused by AI images and videos on the popular social network.
TikTok's Initiative
Content generated using TikTok's AI tools has already been marked with an AI label for over a year. However, the new development includes labeling AI images produced through external platforms as well. TikTok is utilizing Content Credentials developed by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) to achieve this. These credentials add metadata to AI content, aiding in the identification and labeling of such content.
Rollout and Future Plans
TikTok has begun rolling out its AI labeling feature on images and videos, with plans to extend it to audio-only content soon. Content created with AI will now display a label stating "AI-generated" beneath the respective TikTok account's username. The labeling process may take some time to cover all content as it requires the inclusion of Content Credentials for proper identification and labeling.
As more platforms adopt Content Credentials, the identification of AI-generated content is expected to grow across various social networks. In the future, TikTok intends to add Content Credentials to its content, ensuring that even when images and videos are downloaded, the AI origin can be verified using C2PA Verify tools by individuals and other platforms.
