ChatGPT's voice just got smarter and more human: All the details
OpenAI has introduced a significant upgrade to its Advanced Voice feature in ChatGPT for paid users, enhancing the naturalness and expressiveness of its AI-generated speech. This update aims to make the AI's voice sound more fluid, emotionally intelligent, and intuitive, reducing the robotic cadences and incorporating realistic pauses, tone shifts, sarcasm, and empathy, as highlighted in a blog post by OpenAI.
Enhanced Conversational Experience
Besides just improving the quality of the voice, the update also includes real-time translation capabilities, enabling seamless cross-language conversations. Users can now request the AI to translate between languages continuously until instructed otherwise, facilitating smooth communication during scenarios like cafe conversations in Paris or business calls with colleagues in Seoul without the need for repeated translation requests. It essentially offers on-demand conversational interpreting, enhancing user experience.
Available for All Platforms
The upgraded feature is now accessible to all paying users across all platforms. By simply tapping on the Voice icon and speaking, users can leverage these new enhancements. Earlier this year, OpenAI had also made adjustments to minimize interruptions and enhance accent handling, further refining the overall user experience.
However, despite these advancements, OpenAI acknowledges that the update might sporadically impact audio quality, leading to pitch or tone inconsistencies in some voices. Additionally, there is a rare known issue where Voice Mode may produce unexpected audio hallucinations, such as gibberish or phantom background music. OpenAI reassures users that they are actively working on resolving these issues.
