ChatGPT Gets Major Upgrade with 'Deep Research' Mode
OpenAI recently introduced a groundbreaking feature in ChatGPT called "deep research," a sophisticated capability that empowers the tool to execute intricate multi-step research tasks on the internet, completing in minutes what would typically require hours for humans. This advanced feature, known as "deep research," is fueled by an enhanced iteration of the forthcoming OpenAI o3 model, custom-built for web exploration and data interpretation. It is tailored for individuals involved in intensive knowledge-based tasks, particularly in fields like finance, science, policy, and engineering, where precise and dependable research holds significant importance.
Moreover, OpenAI underlined that this tool can also be advantageous for savvy consumers seeking highly personalized recommendations for products that necessitate thorough research, such as automobiles, appliances, and furniture.
To utilize this innovative tool from OpenAI, users can simply opt for the "deep research" option in the ChatGPT message composer and pose their query. Additionally, users have the option to append files or spreadsheets to provide additional context. As the tool commences operation, a sidebar will emerge, displaying a summary of the processes undertaken and resources referenced. The research process typically spans between 5 to 30 minutes, with users receiving a notification upon completion.
Rollout Plan
The rollout of the deep research feature will commence initially for Pro users later today, followed by subsequent availability for Plus and Team users, culminating with Enterprise users.
OpenAI also disclosed plans to incorporate embedded images, data visualizations, and other analytical outputs in the reports in the upcoming weeks to bolster clarity and insights.
This new tool launch from OpenAI coincides with the spotlight on DeepSeek, a Chinese startup that has made waves in the industry with its R1 chatbot. DeepSeek-R1, unveiled last month, is reportedly significantly more cost-effective compared to OpenAI's o1 model, with savings ranging between 20 to 50% depending on the task, as per DeepSeek’s WeChat publication. Last week, DeepSeek's AI assistant surpassed ChatGPT in downloads on Apple's app store, impacting the stock prices of major tech firms, including Nvidia. Sam Altman, too, commended the impressive performance of DeepSeek's R1 AI model.
