Meta says 'nothing prepares you' for its AR glasses
The concept of AR glasses has been attempted multiple times with limited success. However, Meta is now hinting in a recent interview that its upcoming full AR glasses will be extremely impressive, evoking a response akin to the original Oculus Rift.
Meta's Pursuit of AR
Meta has long been dedicated to realizing an AR-centric future, primarily through its Quest line of headsets. While headsets have been a stepping stone, the ultimate goal has always been to enhance reality through a sleek pair of glasses.
Project Nazare and Delays
Meta has been actively developing "Project Nazare," a set of AR glasses. Initially planned for release this year, the project was delayed due to challenges related to weight and software.
Interview Insights
In a recent interview with Android Central, Caitlin Kalinowski, Head of AR Glasses Hardware at Meta, teased significant advancements in the company's AR endeavors.
Kalinowski revealed that the current focus is on creating a comprehensive pair of AR glasses that deliver a groundbreaking experience similar to the awe-inspiring impact of the original Oculus Rift. She emphasized that users will be able to witness both the real world and desired overlays simultaneously, marking a true augmentation of reality rather than a mere recreation.
According to Kalinowski, the high field of view immersion offered by Meta's AR glasses is unparalleled, hinting at the utilization of microOLED projectors for this achievement. Additionally, she highlighted the crucial role of AI in the final product, with the internal strategy shifting to capitalize on the AI revolution.
Future Outlook
Despite the promising developments, Meta's AR glasses are reportedly still a few years away from hitting the market. In the meantime, Meta has enhanced its existing smart glasses, the Ray-Ban Meta, with new AI functionalities leveraging voice and camera inputs, available for purchase starting at $299.
