Google Gemini temporarily halts AI-generated images of humans

Google faced an issue with its Gemini chatbot this week, leading to the temporary suspension of its ability to generate images of human beings. This decision came after multiple reports surfaced, indicating user dissatisfaction with the images produced by Gemini, the AI chatbot formerly known as Google Bard.

Users were reportedly unhappy with the images of historical figures generated by Google Gemini. For example, when asked for pictures of figures such as Nazi soldiers or the U.S. founding Fathers, the chatbot sometimes depicted them with dark, historically inaccurate skin tones. This resulted in backlash from the online community.

Pictures of Gemini-generated images began circulating on social media, showing World War II-era Nazi soldiers with black skin or groups of U.S. Founding Fathers with a wide range of skin tones. Following this, Google issued an apology via the Google Communications account, acknowledging the issue and committing to improving these depictions promptly.

Temporary Suspension

Despite efforts to rectify the situation, Google faced challenges in resolving the issue immediately. Consequently, on February 22, the company decided to temporarily halt Gemini's ability to generate images of humans.

In a subsequent post on X, Google's Communications team reassured users that engineers were working on the issue. They mentioned that the image generation feature would be paused temporarily, with plans to release an improved version soon.

Although the timeline for the feature's return remains uncertain, Google expressed its commitment to enhancing Gemini's ability to generate images of people. Users were informed that they would receive updates on the feature's reinstatement in future release notifications.

As of now, attempts to generate images of humans using Gemini have been unsuccessful. Google continues to work on improving this feature, with the expectation that it will be reintroduced soon.
