Former Meta employee tells Congress what social media giant did to China
A whistleblower testified before congressional lawmakers that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and other executives at Meta actively tried to help China develop artificial intelligence in an effort to win favor with Beijing. Sarah Wynn-Williams, who was the former Director of Global Public Policy at Facebook, detailed her experience at Meta in the scathing memoir "Careless People."
Allegations against Meta
Wynn-Williams revealed that she witnessed Zuckerberg and other Meta executives repeatedly undermine US national security and betray American values. The company allegedly worked in secret to assist China in developing advanced artificial intelligence, aiming to outcompete American companies.
Accusations of AI advancements and censorship
Wynn-Williams also accused Meta of significantly contributing to Chinese advancements in AI technologies like DeepSeek. She further claimed that Meta deleted the Facebook account of Chinese dissident Guo Wengui due to pressure from Beijing.
According to Wynn-Williams, Zuckerberg's actions in trying to build a business in China while portraying himself as a patriot are deceptive. She stated that Meta started briefing the Chinese Communist Party on emerging technologies as early as 2015, focusing on critical areas like artificial intelligence.
Relationship with China and President Trump
Besides cozying up to China, Zuckerberg and other tech executives reportedly sought to improve their relationship with President Donald Trump post his election victory. Wynn-Williams highlighted Zuckerberg's various interests and actions, suggesting a continuous effort to accumulate important contacts and power.
Wednesday's hearing occurred just before Meta's scheduled trial for alleged antitrust violations, indicating growing scrutiny on the social media giant's practices.
