WhatsApp will soon roll out Instagram-like feature for status updates
WhatsApp is continuously working to keep up with the Meta-verse. According to a recent report, the popular messaging app is testing a new feature that will allow users to mention their contacts in their status updates, similar to Instagram.
The new feature will enable users to tag specific contacts in their status and send them instant notifications when mentioned. This will make it easier for users to engage with their intended audience on the platform.
How it works
According to the report published on WABetaInfo, the mention feature has been rolled out to the beta phase for testers. Users can access this feature through a dedicated button located within the caption bar when sharing photos and videos via status updates.
Before publishing the status update, users can select the contacts they want to mention. Once the status is published, the mentioned contacts will receive notifications and a text message in their chat with the user, informing them that they have been mentioned.
Exclusive mentions
It is important to note that mentions are exclusive to the mentioned contacts and are not visible to other viewers of the status update. Notifications and messages will only be sent to the specific individuals mentioned, ensuring discreet communication.
This feature allows users to target specific people in their status updates without sharing this information with a broader audience, maintaining privacy and exclusivity.
Enhanced communication
Regardless of the sender's privacy settings, mentioned contacts will always receive the status update, ensuring that important information involving them is never missed.
Similar to Instagram, mentioned contacts can also reshare the status update with their own audience through a reshare button within the status screen. However, the original creator's identity remains private when the status update is reshared.
Upcoming voice options for Meta AI
Aside from the mention feature, WhatsApp is also exploring new voice options for Meta AI. While the release has not been confirmed yet, it is speculated that the voices will be introduced as part of a voice mode feature.
According to reports, Meta AI will offer a variety of voice options, including three UK voices and two US voices with different pitches and tones. This will allow users to choose a voice that suits their preferences, regional accent, or tone, enhancing their interaction with the chatbot.
