WhatsApp's Latest: Summarize Chats Instantly with Meta AI

WhatsApp will soon let you summarise long chats instantly using Meta AI

WhatsApp has reportedly started testing a new feature that will allow users to summarise unread messages in individual and group chats using Meta AI. The feature was discovered in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android, version 2.25.18.18. With this new feature, Meta's instant messaging platform aims to help users manage large volumes of messages while ensuring privacy.

The feature is powered by Meta AI and utilizes a privacy-preserving system called Private Processing. This ensures that message data remains secure, as it is processed locally on the user's device without being stored externally.

How does it work?

Once a certain number of unread messages is reached, a new "XX unread messages" button appears. Tapping on this button generates a private summary of the conversation, processed locally with end-to-end encryption and anonymised request handling.

Users have the option to enable or disable the feature in the application's settings under the Private Processing section. It is disabled by default in conversations with WhatsApp's "Advanced Chat Privacy" setting enabled, to respect users who prefer not to use AI-based enhancements.

Since this summary feature is the first to utilize Private Processing, WhatsApp may introduce additional tools such as a Writing Help feature. This feature could provide AI-generated suggestions for improving message tone or clarity within a secure environment.

It is important to note that the feature is currently in the testing phase and is only available to a small group of beta testers. A wider rollout is expected in the coming weeks.
