ChatGPT is baked into Apple Intelligence
As confirmed by WWDC 2024, Apple is partnering with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into the iPhone and various other devices, powered by GPT-4o. This collaboration will enable ChatGPT to handle cloud-based queries within iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.
Enhanced AI-Powered Siri
Craig Federighi from Apple mentioned that the new AI-powered Siri can utilize ChatGPT’s knowledge base, with user permission, for situations where it can provide assistance. For example, users can seek menu suggestions for intricate meals based on specific ingredients or even request decorating advice by sharing images with specific details or color schemes. Furthermore, Siri can now assist with documents, presentations, and PDFs.
Advanced Features
Through the new Compose feature, ChatGPT will seamlessly integrate with Apple’s system-wide writing tools. For instance, users can craft personalized bedtime stories tailored to a child’s unique interests. Apple emphasized the importance of verifying critical information for accuracy.
Apple assures users that ChatGPT access is free and does not require an account, with the company guaranteeing that user requests and data will not be stored. Existing ChatGPT subscribers (such as Plus, Teams, or Enterprise) can link their accounts to access premium features via Apple Intelligence experiences, ensuring users have control over when these features are activated.
Availability and Future Prospects
While ChatGPT integration will be accessible in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, the OpenAI functionalities are slated for release “later this year.” Apple also indicated plans to incorporate support for other AI models in the future, hinting at a broader range of AI partnerships beyond OpenAI.
