At yesterday’s I/O conference, Google announced plans to start putting its AI chatbot, Gemini, in a variety of different places, including cars. Today, Volvo said it was shoving its way to the front of the line to be the first to receive the new tech.
Volvo's Expansion of Partnership with Google
Volvo has announced that it is expanding its preexisting partnership with Google to include the integration of Gemini across its model lineup. This expansion builds upon Volvo's early adoption of the built-in Android Automotive operating system for its vehicles.
Drivers will now have the ability to engage in more "natural" conversations with their cars, allowing for tasks such as language translation, navigational assistance, and locating specific destinations. Additionally, drivers can seek information from their vehicle's user manual through the AI assistant, all aimed at reducing the cognitive load on drivers and enhancing road safety.
Access to Google's Gemini
Google revealed that Gemini will be made available to cars supporting Android Auto, with Android Auto users gaining access to Gemini in the coming weeks. However, vehicles with Android Automotive, marketed as Google built-in, will have to wait until later this year to access Gemini's features.
Drivers and passengers will be able to leverage Gemini for various tasks such as sending texts, getting directions, playing music, and more. Gemini's natural language capabilities aim to provide a more seamless and intuitive user experience compared to traditional voice assistants.
Collaboration and Future Developments
Volvo will serve as one of Google's reference hardware platforms for the development and testing of future automotive technology, ensuring that Volvo's vehicles receive new features and updates ahead of their integration into the main Android codebase.
