Meta changes Made with AI label to AI Info on photographers ...
A week back, Meta made headlines for inaccurately tagging images as Made with AI on its social media platforms. Photographers expressed their concerns to news outlets, noting that even their own images were being labeled as Made by AI. After facing backlash, Meta has taken steps to address the issue by replacing the Made with AI label with AI Info on images.
Addressing User Expectations
In a recent blog post, Meta acknowledged that the previous labels did not align with user expectations. The company stated, "Like others in the industry, we found that our labels based on these indicators did not always meet people's expectations and lacked context."
Meta explained that content with minor AI modifications, such as retouching tools, was being labeled as Made with AI due to industry standard indicators. To improve user understanding, Meta has updated the label to AI Info across all its apps, allowing users to access more information with just a click.

Rollout and Changes
According to a statement to The Verge, the new AI Info label will first appear on mobile apps before being implemented on the web. When users click on the updated tag, they will see a message similar to the previous "Made with AI" label, but with a detailed explanation of its application. The message will indicate whether the image is entirely AI-generated or edited using AI-based tools like Generative Fill.
Meta's decision to label AI-generated photos on its social networks dates back to February, aiming to differentiate between AI-generated and authentic images. Since May, Meta has been consistently using the "Made with AI" label on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads apps. However, the initiative faced criticism, especially from photographers and users.
Facing Criticism
A TechCrunch report highlighted the backlash Meta received for inaccurately tagging real photos as "Made with AI." Users and photographers were frustrated with the platform's new AI detection system, reporting numerous mislabeling instances. For example, a photo of the Kolkata Knight Riders celebrating their Indian Premier League Cricket tournament win was mistakenly tagged as Made with AI.

The label's visibility only on mobile apps added to the confusion. Meta's update to the AI Info label aims to provide users with more clarity and transparency regarding AI-generated and AI-edited content.
