Meta Launches Llama 4 AI Series With Major Upgrades

Meta has recently unveiled the latest additions to its artificial intelligence (AI) lineup with the introduction of the Llama 4 series. This new series comes equipped with significant enhancements in AI capabilities, promising a more advanced and efficient user experience.

Meta released two new open-source multimodal models, Llama 4 Scout

Introducing the Llama 4 Series

The Llama 4 series consists of three models: Llama 4 Scout, Llama 4 Maverick, and the upcoming Llama 4 Behemoth. Each model is uniquely designed to elevate AI interactions across various platforms, catering to different user needs and preferences.

Llama 4 Scout

Llama 4 Scout is a compact yet powerful model with 109 billion total parameters and 17 billion active parameters. This model, equipped with 16 experts, features an industry-leading context window of up to 10 million tokens, enabling seamless processing of extensive text sequences. Additionally, Llama 4 Scout operates efficiently on a single Nvidia H100 GPU, making it accessible to organizations with limited computational resources.

In performance benchmarks, Llama 4 Scout has surpassed competitors such as Google’s Gemma 3 and Mistral 3.1, showcasing superior capabilities and performance.

Llama 4 Maverick

On the other hand, Llama 4 Maverick offers 400 billion total parameters with 17 billion active parameters and 128 experts. With a one million token context length, this model excels in coding and reasoning tasks, delivering performance comparable to other top-tier AI models while utilizing fewer active parameters. Its advanced multimodal capabilities enable it to process and understand both text and images, enhancing user experiences across various applications.

Additionally, developers can access Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick through platforms like Amazon SageMaker JumpStart, with plans for availability in Amazon Bedrock in the near future.

Llama 4 Behemoth

Llama 4 Behemoth, the largest model in the series, boasts an impressive 2 trillion total parameters and 288 billion active parameters utilizing 16 experts. Although still in development, it is expected to surpass existing models like GPT-4.5 and Claude Sonnet 3.7 on STEM benchmarks, setting new standards in the AI industry.

Integration and Future Plans

These advanced AI models are seamlessly integrated into Meta’s AI assistant, now available across popular platforms including WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and the web. This integration aims to provide users with more personalized and context-aware interactions, ultimately enhancing the overall user experience.

While Meta promotes these models as open-source, there are licensing restrictions for commercial entities with over 700 million monthly active users, requiring permission from Meta before utilization. This has sparked discussions within the open-source community regarding the true openness of these models.

Meta plans to share more insights about these developments at the upcoming LlamaCon conference on April 29, where they will delve deeper into the Llama 4 series and discuss future AI initiatives.
