Abstract
In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been transformed by Transformers and Large Language Models. Dr. Natarajan will discuss the potential impact of these models in biomedicine, highlighting the ways they can act as care multipliers, improve biological understanding, and address disease burdens. He will introduce key milestones achieved by his team at Google AI, including Med-PaLM, Med-PaLM 2, Med-PaLM M, Med-Gemini, and AMIE.
Med-PaLM and Med-PaLM 2 were groundbreaking AI systems that achieved passing and expert level scores on US Medical License exam questions. Med-PaLM M demonstrated the first generalist, multimodal, biomedical AI system, while Med-Gemini outperformed GPT-4 family models on various medical benchmarks. Recent studies on AMIE showcased its competitive performance in text consultations against Primary Care Physicians and its usefulness in assisting clinicians with complex diagnostic challenges.
