AI is learning from what you said on Reddit, Stack Overflow or ...
Post a comment on Reddit, answer coding questions on Stack Overflow, edit a Wikipedia entry, or share a baby photo on your public Facebook or Instagram feed, and you are also helping to train the next generation of artificial intelligence.
Not everyone is OK with that — especially as the same online forums where they've spent years contributing are increasingly flooded with AI-generated commentary mimicking what real humans might say.
Some longtime users have tried to delete their past contributions or rewrite them into gibberish, but the protests haven't had much effect. A handful of governments — including Brazil's privacy regulator on Tuesday — have also tried to step in.
Challenges Faced by Platforms
Platforms are responding—with mixed results. Stack Overflow, for example, first banned ChatGPT-written responses due to frequent errors, but now it's partnering with AI chatbot developers and has punished some of its own users who tried to erase their past contributions in protest.
Software developer Andy Rotering of Bloomington, Minnesota, who has used Stack Overflow daily for 15 years, said he worries about the impact on the community of contributors who’ve donated time to help other programmers.
The Evolution of AI-Generated Content
Stack Overflow CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar acknowledges the challenges and the delicate balance between providing instant chatbot-generated coding assistance and maintaining a community knowledge base where contributors are recognized for their contributions.
He emphasized the importance of keeping contributors incentivized to provide commentary and highlighted the authenticity of original human thought in a world filled with machine-generated content.
Adapting to AI Changes
As generative AI continues to reshape online platforms, companies like Stack Overflow are racing to develop their own specialized AI solutions to stay competitive. However, some users' attempts to delete past contributions led to account suspensions, highlighting the complexities of balancing user rights and platform ownership.
Brazil's national data protection authority recently took action against Meta Platforms for training its AI models on public content without user consent, showcasing the growing regulatory scrutiny over AI training practices.
The Role of Reddit
Reddit has taken a different approach by partnering with AI developers like OpenAI and Google while emphasizing the importance of user rights and privacy in AI training. The platform's strategic partnerships have also fueled its financial growth, leading to a successful debut on Wall Street.
Despite the challenges posed by AI-generated content, Reddit continues to be a hub for human connections, with voluntary moderators playing a crucial role in upholding community standards and authenticity.
