ChatGPT energy and water consumption: How much does AI use?

According to Sam Altman's blog post titled The Gentle Singularity, a ChatGPT query consumes approximately 0.34 watt-hours of energy and 0.000085 gallons of water. This amount of energy is comparable to what an oven uses in a little over one second, while the water consumption equates to roughly one fifteenth of a teaspoon.
Altman's blog post paints an optimistic picture of the future of AI, foreseeing a world where superintelligence becomes inevitable. He envisions a future where AI significantly contributes to scientific progress, productivity, and overall quality of life. With projections indicating that AI will bring novel insights by 2026 and the advent of robots capable of performing tasks in the wild by 2027, the 2030s are expected to usher in a new era driven by AI advancements.
