Blackmagic Design PYXIS Monitor – First Look | CineD

In a recent podcast episode, Nino took a closer look at the newly announced Blackmagic Design PYXIS monitor. This monitor is specifically designed for the Blackmagic PYXIS 6K camera and offers a native 5-inch HDR touchscreen display. The connectivity is established via USB-C, providing users with full access to camera settings and menus.

Key Features of the PYXIS Monitor

The PYXIS monitor is bright, lightweight, small, and handy, making it a convenient accessory for filmmakers. Craig Heffernan from Blackmagic Design highlights the versatility of this monitor, which was developed based on feedback received after the initial announcement at NAB. The monitor features an HDR 1080p touchscreen display with 1500 nits of brightness and a compact size of 5 inches. It can be easily attached to various mounting points around the PYXIS camera. The connection to the camera is achieved with a single USB-C cable, used for both power and data transfer.

Enhanced Camera Control

Users can expect the same output from the camera on the PYXIS monitor as seen on the side monitor, including overlays, settings, and menu functionalities. Through the USB-C connection, complete camera control is enabled, offering a seamless shooting experience.

The monitor serves as an extension of the built-in side screen, providing access to fully featured camera menus through a separate display. This feature is compatible with PYXIS 6K and Blackmagic URSA Cine cameras. While potential compatibility with other manufacturers exists, it would function primarily as a preview monitor without interactive capabilities.

Customizable Functionality

Similar to the camera, the PYXIS monitor includes three customizable function buttons on the back. Users can assign specific settings such as false color or frame rate adjustments for quick access without needing to physically interact with the camera.

Preorders for the cameras are currently being fulfilled gradually, with PYXIS monitors available for pre-order and expected to ship later this year. Additionally, each monitor comes with a clip-on sunshade for improved visibility in bright conditions and offers various mounting options through different packages.
