Meta and optical multinational EssilorLuxottica have announced the launch of the Ray-Ban Meta collection in the UAE starting from May 12. These innovative glasses, when paired with a smartphone, offer users the ability to capture hands-free photos and videos, listen to audio through open-ear speakers, and utilize the built-in Meta AI assistant.
The launch of the Ray-Ban Meta collection signifies the dawn of a more seamless and interconnected future, empowering individuals to stay present in the moment while remaining connected to what matters most. Fares Akkad, the regional director for the Middle East and Africa at Meta, shared these insights with Arab News.
Features of Ray-Ban Meta Glasses
The Ray-Ban Meta glasses are equipped with an ultrawide 12-megapixel camera capable of capturing high-quality photos and 1080-pixel videos lasting up to three minutes. Users can also live stream content directly to Instagram or Facebook for up to 30 minutes. The glasses come integrated with Meta AI, allowing users to perform various tasks through voice commands, such as recommending music or taking pictures.
Future Enhancements and Availability
In the future, users in the UAE can expect additional features such as using Meta AI to inquire about their surroundings, including landmark identification and street sign translations. Live translation capabilities are currently available in English, French, Italian, and Spanish, with Arabic support anticipated in the future.
Regular software updates will be provided to enhance the functionality of the glasses, introducing features like timers, alarms, calendar access, and email management. The Ray-Ban Meta collection offers a range of styles and lens options, including prescription lenses, and will be accessible at all Ray-Ban and partner stores in the UAE starting May 12, with prices starting at AED1,330 ($360).
India's Social Media Restrictions
Meanwhile, in India, there have been recent restrictions on social media platforms, with over 8,000 accounts being ordered to be blocked. X, the platform in question, expressed reluctance in complying with what they deemed as government-imposed censorship. The move is part of India's broader crackdown on social media accounts, particularly targeting Pakistani individuals and organizations amidst growing tensions between the two countries.
