OpenAI launches AI research agent for ChatGPT
The new feature is powered by a version of OpenAI’s forthcoming o3 model, designed specifically to enhance web browsing capabilities and streamline data analysis. US generative AI major OpenAI has launched a new agentic AI tool, called deep research, in ChatGPT. The deep research feature is aimed at professionals engaged in intensive knowledge work across domains such as finance, science, policy, and engineering.
The AI agent, developed using end-to-end reinforcement learning, focuses on complex browsing and reasoning tasks across various fields, OpenAI explained. According to OpenAI, the deep research agent can operate independently when prompted. ChatGPT will find, analyze, and synthesize hundreds of online sources to create a comprehensive report at the level of a research analyst. It accomplishes tasks in mere minutes that would take a human many hours.
Limitations and Future Plans
OpenAI notes that while the deep research tool is powerful, it is still in its early phases and comes with certain limitations. The tool can sometimes provide incorrect information or struggle to distinguish authoritative information from rumors. OpenAI aims to integrate the tool with specialized data sources in the future, including subscription-based and internal resources.
In addition to deep research, OpenAI has also launched the Operator AI agent, which can interact with graphical user interfaces. OpenAI, in collaboration with SoftBank, is working on Stargate, a $500bn AI initiative aimed at building advanced infrastructure.
