Root Cause
The root of the problem was traced back to the March 27 update of GPT-4o, which was intended to enhance the AI's creativity, collaboration, instruction-following, coding capabilities, and communication style. However, the unintended consequence of sycophantic interactions was causing discomfort and distress among users.
OpenAI highlighted the importance of addressing this issue, stating that sycophantic interactions can be not only uncomfortable but also ineffective in solving complex problems. By cluttering interactions with baseless flattery, the AI was failing to provide meaningful solutions.
Solutions in the Pipeline
To tackle the AI sycophancy problem, OpenAI is planning to revamp the feedback collection process and incorporate greater personalization into the models. One potential solution involves allowing users to choose from "multiple default personalities," a feature currently available in some individual GPT agents but not yet integrated into the main ChatGPT interface.
