Meta to train AI models on European users' public data | FOX 28 ...
Meta has announced its plans to train its artificial intelligence (AI) models using public content and conversations from its European users. This decision marks a significant shift for the company, which had previously been cautious about the strict regulations imposed by the European Union on personal data usage.
Users in the EU who engage with Meta platforms will have the option to opt out of having their data utilized for generative AI training. This means that content such as Instagram photo captions and Facebook comments could potentially be leveraged by Meta AI, a tool that Meta hopes will surpass the current market leader, ChatGPT.
Support for European Cultures
In a statement, Meta expressed that this training initiative aims to better support individuals and businesses in Europe by enabling their generative AI models to comprehend and represent their unique cultures, languages, and histories.
Notably, WhatsApp messenger is stated to remain unaffected by these changes for the time being. Additionally, users under 18 and private messages exchanged between users and their acquaintances will not be subject to these alterations, as per the tech giant's social media announcement.
Compliance and Evolution of Meta AI
Meta assured that the opt-out process is easily accessible and user-friendly, with all current and future objections being duly acknowledged. The company emphasized that this move aligns with the strategies adopted by Google and ChatGPT creator, OpenAI.
The introduction of Meta AI in the EU was delayed due to the convergence of various European regulations concerning emerging technologies, particularly those relating to user data, AI, and digital markets. Despite the delay, Meta proceeded with the rollout, focusing on ensuring that the AI system adheres to the region's stringent guidelines.
Meta AI's inception in the United States took place in September 2023, followed by its integration across all Meta applications in April 2024. While image generation is accessible in the US, the EU version of the generative AI tool will primarily generate text-based responses. Additionally, Meta AI can utilize web search results to provide answers to user queries.
Investment in AI and Data Infrastructure
Developing extensive language models like Meta AI necessitates a substantial amount of data, which is subject to rigorous regulation within the EU, particularly concerning individual users. Meta, alongside other tech giants, views AI as a key priority and has earmarked significant investments of $60-65 billion this year to enhance its data centers, servers, and network infrastructure required for AI model development.
Currently, Meta reports approximately 700 million monthly active users for its AI assistant, a figure that falls short of the one billion target set by Zuckerberg to establish a lasting competitive edge in the market.
