Meta forms advisory group to guide company on AI, Mark ...
OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022 and discussions around AI and its impact on humanity reached new heights. In addition to this, tech companies like Microsoft, Google, and even Meta began rolling out their own AI chatbots. Meta entered the AI chatbot race recently and rolled out its virtual assistant Meta AI for a few users.
The company, like others, has been actively working towards AI development and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg has never shied away from expressing his interest in AI in public. Now, Meta has formed a council that will advise it on AI-related matters. The company announced the same through its website.
Introducing the Meta Advisory Group
Meta's new advisory council, named the Meta Advisory Group, consists of four prominent executives:
- Patrick Collison, CEO and co-founder of Stripe Inc
- Nat Friedman, former CEO of GitHub
- Tobi L¼tke, CEO of Shopify Inc
- Charlie Songhurst, investor and former Microsoft executive
Notably, none of these executives will receive compensation for their roles, a Meta spokesperson confirmed while talking to Bloomberg. Zuckerberg expressed his admiration for the advisory group in an internal note to Meta employees, which was reviewed by Bloomberg.
"I’ve come to deeply respect this group of people and their achievements in their respective areas, and I’m grateful that they’re willing to share their perspectives with Meta at such an important time as we take on new opportunities with AI and the metaverse," he wrote.
Role of the Advisory Group
While Meta already has an 11-person board of directors, the Meta Advisory Group will function differently. Unlike the board members who are elected by shareholders and carry a fiduciary duty to the company, the advisory group members are selected by the company and do not hold any fiduciary responsibilities. This distinction allows the group to focus solely on providing strategic insights and recommendations without the formal obligations of board membership.
A Meta spokesperson elaborated on the role of the advisory group, saying, "This advisory group is tasked with offering insights and recommendations on technological advancements, innovation, and strategic growth opportunities."
Strategic Growth and Innovation
The formation of this advisory group comes at a pivotal moment for Meta, as it seeks to strengthen its position in AI and expand its horizons in the metaverse. With the collective expertise of Collison, Friedman, L¼tke, and Songhurst, Meta aims to leverage their diverse experiences to navigate the complexities of technological innovation and strategic growth.
As AI continues to advance and the metaverse concept gains traction, companies like Meta recognize the importance of having knowledgeable advisors to guide their journey. By assembling this advisory group, Meta is not only reinforcing its commitment to innovation but also positioning itself to make informed decisions that could shape the future of technology.
