OpenAI launches GPTo, improving ChatGPT's text, visual and audio capabilities
OpenAI has unveiled its latest artificial intelligence model, GPTo, which boasts the ability to mimic human cadences in its verbal responses and can even attempt to discern people's moods. This development evokes memories of the 2013 film "Her," in which the protagonist forms a romantic bond with an artificially intelligent operating system.
While GPTo may not be as alluring as the AI in "Her," OpenAI highlights that the new model operates more efficiently than its predecessors and can analyze text, audio, and video in real time. Referred to as "omni," GPT-4o will serve as the powerhouse behind OpenAI's widely-used ChatGPT chatbot. The company has announced that GPTo will be accessible to users, including those utilizing the free version, in the upcoming weeks.
Enhanced Capabilities of GPTo
During a brief live-streamed update, Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati and other executives showcased GPTo's capabilities. The AI bot engaged in real-time conversations with added emotional emphasis, responding with "more drama" upon request. It also demonstrated its ability to guide through solving mathematical equations and tackled a complex software coding issue on a computer screen without providing a direct answer initially.
Furthermore, GPTo ventured into assessing an individual's emotional state by analyzing a selfie video, determining the person's happiness based on their smile.
It also displayed language translation capabilities by converting text between English and Italian, illustrating how it can facilitate multilingual conversations for users.
Industry Analyst's Perspective
Gartner analyst Chirag Dekate shared insights on OpenAI's latest update, expressing that the demonstration indicated a catch-up effort by OpenAI in comparison to larger competitors. Dekate remarked that several of the showcased features and demonstrations by OpenAI resembled advanced versions previously presented by Google during their Gemini 1.5 Pro launch. Although OpenAI gained an initial advantage with ChatGPT and GPT-3, Dekate suggested that capability gaps are now emerging relative to industry peers, particularly Google.
Meanwhile, Google is gearing up for its I/O developer conference, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, where it is anticipated to introduce enhancements to its own AI model, Gemini.
