Google's Gemini AI grows rapidly to 350M global users, but still trails ...
Google's flagship AI chatbot app, Gemini, has exhibited substantial user growth over the past year, boasting over 350 million users globally as of March 2025. This significant increase in user base was disclosed during the Google Search antitrust trial, where a US federal court is deliberating on potential remedies to address Google's dominant position in the search market.
Increased Adoption and Integration
Notably, in the previous month, the tech giant's AI application witnessed more than 35 million daily active users, signifying a remarkable surge in the adoption of Google's AI solutions. This surge is particularly noteworthy as Gemini had a mere nine daily active users in October 2024. The widespread consumer adoption of Gemini can be attributed to its gradual integration with Samsung phones, Google Workspace applications, and Chrome. Additionally, Google has introduced Gemini 2.0 and 2.5 models over the past year, which are considered substantial advancements over the earlier Gemini iterations.
Competition and Challenges
Despite its rapid growth, Gemini faces competition from other AI platforms. For instance, while Gemini currently boasts 350 million Monthly Active Users (MAUs), OpenAI's ChatGPT reportedly has around 600 MAUs, and Meta AI's MAU count stands at approximately 500 million. This competitive landscape challenges Gemini to further enhance its offerings and user experience to remain competitive in the market.
Legal Proceedings and Partnerships
In a related development, US Judge Amit Mehta previously ruled that Google's search engine operates as an illegal monopoly. The ongoing trial is focused on determining the damages Google must pay and the severity of penalties to be imposed on the company. Testimony from the trial has revealed Google's financial arrangements with Samsung, wherein Google pays substantial amounts to have its Gemini AI chatbot pre-installed on devices manufactured by the electronics giant.
As part of a two-year deal, Google is obligated to share a percentage of its ad revenue generated through the AI app with Samsung, in addition to fixed monthly payments. Internal presentations showcased during the trial suggest that Google had contemplated more stringent distribution agreements that would mandate partners to preinstall Gemini alongside Search and Chrome, indicating Google's strategic efforts to expand Gemini's reach.
