Google is rolling out an update for its Chat app that'll tell you everything you need to know before opening a thread. The update includes Gemini-backed summaries for unread conversations. When hovering over conversations, a "summarize" button will appear, and interacting with it produces a bulleted list of "important" information.
Gemini in Chat Update
Earlier in October, Google Chat introduced video messaging as an extension of its voice messages update. In a Workspace post, Google highlighted the beginning of its "Gemini in Chat" update. This update brings AI-backed summaries to busy conversations. Users will soon find a bulleted list of important points from an unread chat thread in the app. This feature may help users focus and prioritize tasks efficiently.
On the web version of Chat, users will find Gemini's "summarize" button when hovering over an unread conversation. Clicking the button will expand a drop-down menu showing a "Summary" banner with key points identified by Gemini. Google describes this as a synopsis of the conversation.
Mobile Compatibility
Google Gemini's chat summaries are also available for mobile users. To view them, users must long-press an unread chat thread. Gemini's summaries will appear automatically above the app's list of thread options. However, Google advises users to verify the accuracy of the summaries, as the AI may occasionally make mistakes.
Additionally, users have the option to disable this feature if they prefer not to use Gemini for synopsis purposes.
Availability
The update is being rolled out for web, Android, and iOS users. It is scheduled for release on both rapid and scheduled release domains. Google Workspace customers with add-ons such as Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium, and AI & Messaging are eligible for this update.
Recent Chat Upgrades
Google has been enhancing its Chat app throughout 2024. In a recent update, Google introduced video messaging similar to other popular messaging platforms. Users can now record three-minute-long videos within the Chat app, which can be sent in direct messages, group DMs, and spaces.
This update builds on Google's earlier addition of voice messages to Chat, offering users an alternative to typing text messages. However, voice messages are currently limited to Enterprise customers.
