Google's new AI feature makes it easier to summarise PDF files ...
Google has introduced a new Gemini AI feature for its Files app, aimed at improving the efficiency of handling PDFs. According to a report by Android Police, the Gemini screen awareness feature allows users to ask questions about open PDFs directly within the Files app, aiding in extracting important or relevant information from large PDF documents. This feature was initially showcased at Google's annual developer conference in May.
How does the feature work?
When users access a PDF document in the Files app, they can activate the Gemini overlay by either saying "Hey Google" or pressing and holding the power button. A prompt will then appear, inviting users to "Ask about this PDF." Users can proceed to type their questions, and Gemini will generate answers based on the PDF content. This screen awareness feature proves to be particularly beneficial for professionals and students who frequently engage with PDF documents, enabling them to swiftly summarize lengthy texts and efficiently review multiple documents. For instance, users can request Gemini to summarize a research paper or highlight key points, facilitating a better understanding of the main ideas without having to read through the entire document.
Who can use the feature?
This feature is being rolled out to devices operating on Android 15 and above. Users subscribed to Gemini Advanced will have access to this functionality, which utilizes a 1 million token context window to deliver comprehensive answers. As of now, this feature is not accessible to free users. Google has not provided any information regarding the availability of the screen awareness feature to all users.
