Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has been making waves globally with its cost-effective AI model. According to a report from China’s mydrivers, DeepSeek has exceeded 20 million daily active users (DAU) within just 20 days of its launch, achieving 40% of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Fastest-Growing AI Application
DeepSeek's rapid growth in terms of DAU has positioned it as the fastest-growing AI application worldwide, as highlighted in a report by the Economic Daily News. As of January 31, the top three AI applications globally by DAU were ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and ByteDance’s Doubao, respectively.
Surpassing Industry Leaders
The DeepSeek app, which was launched on January 11, reached 22.15 million daily active users in just 21 days. This accounted for 41.6% of ChatGPT’s 53.23 million users, according to the report from mydrivers.
Previously, ByteDance’s Doubao held the title of the most popular AI app in China. However, DeepSeek surpassed Doubao in January, with 22.15 million DAUs compared to Doubao’s 17 million, as reported by Tech in Asia.
Global Success
As of January 31, DeepSeek demonstrated strong performance in the Apple App Store, securing the top spot in 157 countries and regions, including the crucial U.S. market, as noted by mydrivers.
Additionally, a report from Cailian Press, citing SimilarWeb, revealed that DeepSeek’s website outperformed Google’s Gemini in terms of users within a week. By January 31, DeepSeek.com garnered 2.4 million daily visits from the U.S.—a 60% increase compared to Gemini’s 1.5 million.
Industry Response
The Economic Daily News report indicated that DeepSeek's success has prompted swift reactions from Chinese companies. Cloud platforms such as Tencent, Baidu, and Alibaba have announced the integration of DeepSeek's model. Moreover, China's major GPU manufacturers—Huawei’s Ascend, Moore Threads, Shanghai’s iluvatar, and MetaX—have pledged their support to DeepSeek's development.
