ChatGPT on iOS 18.2 can do more than just answer questions ...
When Apple revealed iOS 18 in June, it announced that a future software update would integrate OpenAI’s chatbot into the system. The wait is finally over for beta testers, with the release of iOS 18.2 developer beta 1, now available for iPhone 16 and 15 Pro models. This update introduces ChatGPT as part of Apple Intelligence.
Exploring ChatGPT Integration
After updating to iOS 18.2 beta 1 on a compatible iPhone, users will discover a new ChatGPT menu within the Apple Intelligence settings. This menu allows users to enable the integration, granting access to OpenAI’s capabilities across various parts of the operating system. A similar option is also available on the first betas of iPadOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2.
Enhanced Functionality
Users have the option to maintain a copy of the queries handled by ChatGPT through iOS by signing in with their existing OpenAI account. This chat history will then be accessible via the official ChatGPT app and website. Additionally, users subscribed to the premium ChatGPT plan can sign in to allow iOS to utilize the best available model. However, account sign-in is optional, and the integration can be used without an account for those concerned about privacy.
Beyond its role in answering questions where Siri may struggle, ChatGPT is now integrated into Writing Tools, enabling users to leverage the chatbot for text composition from scratch. Users can also select existing text and specify the desired changes. Furthermore, ChatGPT powers Visual Intelligence features, enabling it to describe photos and identify products or items within images.
Release and Recommendations
The ChatGPT integration is set to debut in December as part of iOS 18.2. For those eager to explore the feature sooner, the first developer beta can be installed on a supported iPhone. However, it is advisable not to install the beta on a primary device, as it may contain significant bugs that could potentially brick the device.
