OpenAI: Cyber actors exploiting ChatGPT to influence elections
OpenAI recently revealed in a report that they have identified and disrupted over 20 attempts where cyber actors were trying to use their artificial intelligence models, such as ChatGPT, to create fake content with the intention of influencing elections globally. These cyber actors, including state-linked entities, utilized OpenAI's tools to generate AI-produced articles, social media posts, and comments in an effort to manipulate public opinion.
Exploitation of OpenAI Tools
The report by OpenAI detailed the deceptive activities aimed at spreading misinformation during elections in various regions such as the United States, Rwanda, India, and the European Union. For instance, an Iranian operation in August leveraged OpenAI's models to create extensive articles and comments related to the U.S. election. OpenAI also took action to ban ChatGPT accounts in Rwanda that were involved in posting election-related content on social media platforms.
Impact and Response
Despite these malicious efforts, OpenAI reported that none of the operations managed to gain significant viral traction or establish lasting audiences. The company highlighted its swift response in neutralizing such attempts, often resolving issues within 24 hours of detection. The growing concerns surrounding the use of AI-generated content to interfere in elections have sparked discussions about the potential threats posed by this technology.
Global Concerns
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has raised alarms about the potential exploitation of AI by foreign actors, including Russia, Iran, and China, to influence events like the U.S. presidential election. With the rise in deepfakes and other AI-generated content, there has been a marked increase in the volume of misleading information circulating online.
According to data from Clarity, a machine learning firm, there has been a 900% surge in the creation of such content over the past year. OpenAI stressed the importance of heightened awareness and vigilance in the face of the expanding adoption of generative AI technologies.
