Panel Mulls Consolidating OpenAI Copyright Suits' Pretrial Work
A panel of judges on Thursday appeared receptive to the idea of consolidating pretrial proceedings in numerous copyright infringement lawsuits filed against OpenAI Inc. by authors and publishers.
Attorneys representing OpenAI presented their case before the Judicial Panel on Multi District Litigation in Charlotte, asserting that consolidation is essential due to the substantial overlap in factual questions and witnesses who need to be deposed.
However, authors, book publishers, and news organizations contested OpenAI's motion to consolidate the 12 lawsuits.
