Gemini AI Comes to Google Drive, Docs, Gmail as Sidebar | PCMag
Google has introduced Gemini to its suite of free apps for paying users, which includes Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Gmail. This AI integration raises privacy concerns due to its access to user files.
Expanding Reach
Google is actively rolling out Gemini to a wider audience by adding it as a side panel to various Google applications like Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Gmail. This recent announcement indicates that Gemini 1.5 Pro will soon be available as a pop-out sidebar accessible via a button on Google Drive.
Integration Details
Within Gmail, Gemini can assist with writing emails and summarizing incoming messages. In Google Slides, it can create agendas, summaries, new slides, and custom images. For Google Sheets, the Gemini sidebar provides table templates, formulas, and data sorting functionalities.
Data Privacy Concerns
Despite the potential benefits of using Gemini to expedite document creation, the integration of this AI raises questions about data privacy. As per Google's Gemini app policy, user data is collected to enhance Google products and services, including machine-learning technologies.
Privacy Assurance
Google reassures users that Workspace data is not used to train AI models without permission. The company also promises not to sell Drive or Workspace data. The full rollout of Gemini sidebars is expected within 15 days for paying users.
Continued Updates
Although Gemini has faced challenges, such as inaccuracies in image generation, Google has made efforts to improve the AI tool. Updates have included direct document uploads and the introduction of an "Education" edition available in over 150 countries.
