Meta recently extended support for the Meta AI chatbot to new markets. If you've noticed a new light-blue circle in your WhatsApp chats, you may be wondering what it is all about. Initially rolled out in the US and Canada, this feature has now made its way to Europe, including the UK, as well as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and India.
The AI-powered chatbot is part of the Meta ecosystem, which includes Instagram and Messenger. It offers essential functions such as text generation, content creation, and question answering. However, some users have raised concerns about privacy and the ability to disable this feature.
WhatsApp’s Meta AI Button Functionality
WhatsApp's new Meta AI button can be found in the bottom-right corner on iOS and above the new chat icon on Android. It facilitates direct communication between users and the Meta AI assistant. Users can tag @Meta AI in their chats to ask questions, and the chatbot is built on Meta's Llama 3.2 language model.
Initially, the chatbot offers limited features, focusing on assisting users in content creation and internet searches. More features are expected to be introduced over time.
According to Meta, the AI assistant cannot access or read message content unless explicitly requested. Messages are end-to-end encrypted, and no data is linked to other Meta accounts like Facebook or Instagram. While interactions with Meta AI are not encrypted, private message content remains secure.
Disabling Meta AI on WhatsApp
For users who wish to disable Meta AI on WhatsApp, there is currently no option to do so. The button will continue to appear in the app even if not used. However, users can reset the AI to remove chat messages and information stored by the chatbot while retaining their own data.
To reset a chat with Meta AI:
- Type /reset-ai in any individual chat
- To reset all chats, type /reset-all-ais in a chat with Meta AI
These commands are applicable for Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger chats.
