AI Development Beyond the US
The head of Meta’s Llama AI division predicts that artificial intelligence development will not remain exclusive to the US but will expand to countries like Australia. However, he emphasizes that a crucial technological advancement is necessary for this shift to occur.
While the data center industry in the US is currently thriving due to the increasing demand for power and processors essential for AI development, there has been uncertainty about whether this momentum would extend beyond American borders. Manohar Paluri, the VP of AI at Meta, is optimistic about the global expansion of AI development.
Paluri explained in an interview with Capital Brief, “The fundamental reason for that is the limitation of power. In a particular region, you will have only so much power, even if you have the real estate, so the power constraints of the world will mean [decentralisation].” This limitation is seen as a significant factor contributing to the potential decentralization of AI development activities.

Paluri anticipates a significant shift once companies like Meta and its counterparts find a way to achieve “asynchronous” AI training.
