Meta Expands AI Training To EU, Using Public Facebook And ...

On Monday, American tech giant Meta announced that it would be utilizing publicly shared content from users within the European Union (EU) to enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) models, as reported by Xinhua.

The company revealed that it would be leveraging public posts, comments, and interactions with Meta’s AI features from adult users across its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. This decision comes on the heels of the recent introduction of Meta AI in the region. Meta emphasized the importance of training its models on European data to effectively capture the nuances of the region’s languages, humor, and cultural context.

EU users can expect to receive in-app notifications and emails this week regarding the data training policy. Meta also highlighted that users have the option to opt out of the plan through a simple and accessible form. The company underlined that its approach aligns with industry norms, drawing parallels to practices observed by Google and OpenAI, and underscored its commitment to transparency in data usage.

While Meta AI was initially launched as a standalone app in the United States in early 2024, its expansion into Europe faced delays due to regulatory concerns. The planned roll-out in 2024 was postponed due to the stringent data protection and transparency requirements mandated by the EU.
