The Gemini app on Android has introduced new lock screen capabilities for calls and texts. This new feature allows users to use voice commands to call or message their stored contacts. Google initially introduced this feature in beta last December, followed by the testing of its updated Flash 2.0 model.
Enhanced Capabilities
Google has started rolling out an update for Android users to enhance the functionality of its AI, Gemini. The Gemini app on Android now allows calling and messaging directly from the lock screen. This update also affects the basic Google Assistant, with Gemini taking over certain features previously handled by the Assistant.
With this new feature, users can easily make calls or send messages by simply activating the AI overlay on the lock screen and speaking their command. Similarly, hands-free voice commands like "Hey Google, call..." or "Hey Google, text/message..." can be used to initiate calls or messages.
Enabling Extensions
For users to fully utilize this feature, it is recommended to enable the Phone app and Messages extensions via the Gemini app settings page. These extensions allow users to seamlessly interact with the Gemini AI for making calls and sending messages.
The lock screen calling and messaging feature for Gemini was first identified in version 15.50 of the Google app. If you have not yet received this update on your device, it should be arriving shortly.

Additionally, Google is continuously improving its AI capabilities by introducing the Flash 2.0 experiment for Advanced subscribers of the Gemini app on Android. This experiment offers a faster and lighter AI model, surpassing the previous Flash 1.5 and Gemini 1.5 Pro models.
