OpenAI launches GPTo, improving ChatGPT's text, visual and audio capabilities
OpenAI has introduced a new update to its artificial intelligence model, enhancing its ability to replicate human cadences in verbal responses and even analyze people's emotions. This advancement brings to mind the narrative of the 2013 movie "Her," where the protagonist forms a sentimental connection with an artificially intelligent operating system, resulting in intricate complications.
The latest model, GPT-4o, also known as "omni," is set to empower OpenAI's widely used chatbot, ChatGPT. It boasts improved speed compared to its predecessors and can seamlessly process text, audio, and video content in real-time. OpenAI has revealed that this upgraded version will be accessible to users, including those utilizing the free variant, in the upcoming weeks.
Enhanced Capabilities
During a brief live-streamed presentation, Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati and other executives showcased the capabilities of the AI chatbot. The demonstration exhibited the AI's real-time conversational skills, incorporating emotions, particularly injecting "more drama" into its voice upon request.
Moreover, the AI showcased its problem-solving abilities by guiding through the steps to solve both a simple math equation and a complex software coding issue. It also ventured into gauging an individual's emotional state by analyzing a selfie video, where it deduced the person's happiness based on their smile.
In addition, the AI exhibited its language translation prowess by converting text between English and Italian, illustrating how it can facilitate conversations between individuals speaking different languages.
Industry Response
Gartner analyst Chirag Dekate commented on the update, noting that it appears OpenAI is striving to catch up with its larger competitors. Dekate observed that some of the features and demonstrations presented by OpenAI seemed reminiscent of advanced versions showcased by Google in their Gemini 1.5 pro launch.
While OpenAI initially had a lead with offerings like ChatGPT and GPT-3, Dekate suggested that compared to industry peers, particularly Google, there may be emerging capability gaps. Google is scheduled to host its I/O developer conference, where it is anticipated to unveil enhancements to its own AI model, Gemini.
