You Can Now Create 'Gems' in Google's Gemini Chatbot
Google recently introduced 'Gems' in Gemini as a way to compete with ChatGPT's custom GPTs. It has been almost a year since OpenAI unveiled its customizable GPTs, personalized versions of ChatGPT tailored for specific tasks. For example, 'Dall-E' is a custom GPT designed for generating AI images, while a “Creative Writing Coach” GPT offers feedback and guidance to enhance writing skills.

Introducing 'Gems' in Gemini
Google has now rolled out a similar feature within its Gemini ecosystem called 'Gems.' These Gems were first previewed at Google’s I/O 2024 conference in May and are now available to Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users in over 150 countries. Gems can be accessed on both desktop and mobile devices, providing users with more control over their AI interactions.
Gems enable users to customize Gemini to create personal AI experts on any topic. Whether you need a chatbot optimized for generating product ideas or a writing assistant, image generator, gym buddy, recipe creator, and more, Gems allow you to tailor AI interactions to your specific needs.
Creating a Gem in Gemini
To create a Gem in Gemini, you start by defining its behavior and functions. Gems will be part of the Gemini Advanced feature set, utilizing the Gemini Advanced model, currently at version 1.5 Pro. This model enhances customization capabilities, providing a richer and more intuitive experience.
When you access Google Gemini, you will find a list of your Gems on the sidebar. To create a Gem, navigate to the “Gems Manager” menu on the sidebar. Within the Gems Manager, you can choose from Google’s premade Gems or create your own from scratch by selecting the “New Gem” button.

Give your Gem a name and provide instructions on its functions. Once you save the instructions, Gemini configures the Gem according to your specifications. You can then start using the Gem by clicking on the “Start Chat” button.
Exploring Premade Gems
If creating a Gem from scratch seems daunting, you can explore Google’s set of premade Gems designed for various scenarios. Unfortunately, Gems cannot be shared directly with others in Gemini at this time. They are currently intended for personal customization and use only.
Final Thoughts
Google's launch of Gems in Gemini is a welcome addition, offering users the ability to personalize their AI interactions. While Google may have entered the customizable AI space later than OpenAI, Gems present a promising feature that simplifies tasks and enhances user experience.
With Gems now available in Gemini, alongside the introduction of Imagen 3, its latest image generation model, Google aims to provide users with enhanced AI capabilities. As this ecosystem continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Google's Gems compare to existing custom GPT models.
