After using ChatGPT search as my default search engine for a little over a week, I can say that it won't be replacing Google Search for me in the near future. The launch of the tool to free users means you can set ChatGPT Search as the default search engine in your web browser settings, which changes the way queries are handled. Despite finding the summaries generated by ChatGPT Search useful, there were instances when I preferred to select sources on my own.
On Google, the search results often feel limitless, providing a wide range of options and information. For example, a search for "55 inch TV stand" on Google displays numerous choices, and the Google Shopping feature offers a comprehensive marketplace experience due to an AI revamp. In contrast, ChatGPT Search offers a curated selection of products and additional links in the source tab, presenting information in a more focused manner.
ChatGPT Search vs. Google Search Experience
While some users may prefer the streamlined approach of ChatGPT Search, others, like me, appreciate the breadth of information that Google provides. Google's layout, including AI Overviews at the top of some queries, offers users a quick summary along with the option to explore further.
During the experiment, I found that I often resorted to using Google as my primary search engine due to ChatGPT Search taking longer to provide answers. Google's extensive dominance in the search engine space has influenced user habits, as it offers a wide range of search capabilities and features.
Conclusion
Both ChatGPT Search and Google Search have their strengths and are suited for different types of queries. While ChatGPT Search excels in organizing information for specific prompts or questions, Google's comprehensive access to a vast array of web content remains unparalleled. For now, I appreciate the unique features of both search engines and recognize the value they bring to my online searches.
