Google co-founder Sergey Brin has recommended that employees working on Gemini should come to the office every weekday and put in 60 hours of work every week to achieve maximum productivity. According to The New York Times, Brin emphasized the importance of working at full capacity to reach artificial general intelligence (AGI) and emerge as leaders in AI development that can either match or exceed human intelligence levels.

Use of Google's AI Tools

In his internal memo, Brin also urged employees to leverage Google's AI tools for coding purposes. He highlighted that many employees do not currently work the recommended 60 hours a week and criticized those who only do the "bare minimum" at work. It should be noted that Brin's recommendations are not a formal directive across the entire company.

Competitive Landscape in AI Development

Google's leadership is currently strategizing on regaining the lead in Generative AI development from OpenAI. The release of ChatGPT preceded Google's Bard chatbot (later rebranded as Gemini), which faced technical issues. However, the competitive dynamics shifted in 2025 with the introduction of DeepSeek's R1 model, disrupting the U.S.-based AI industry. The Chinese company's model reportedly achieved similar performance to its competitors across machine learning benchmarks at a significantly lower development cost. Moreover, DeepSeek offered developers access to its model at highly competitive rates.
