Meta's AI-generated social media users unnerve human users - The Impact of AI on Social Media
Meta recently caused a stir by removing several AI-generated bot profiles from Instagram after they were discovered by users. According to various media reports and social media users, this move by Meta triggered a range of emotions including anger, disgust, and suspicion among the human users.
The AI-generated Profiles
The removed Instagram profiles portrayed various personas, including a dating coach, a writer, and a mother who identified as part of the LGBT community. These profiles featured AI-generated photos of the bot users and their bios explicitly stated that they were managed by AI under the umbrella of Meta.
Many Instagram users were perturbed when they noticed the AI-generated profiles acting like human users, sharing everyday photos and captions about fictional daily events. Some users even reported that they were unable to block these accounts even if they wanted to.
Criticism and Response
While AI-managed profiles on social media platforms are not a new phenomenon, the recent backlash against them is unprecedented. One of the AI profiles now displays a message on its user profile page stating, "Sorry, this page isn’t available. The link you followed may be broken, or the page may have been removed. Go back to Instagram."
Implications for Social Media Users
The presence of AI-generated users on popular social media platforms raises questions about authenticity, transparency, and user experience. As social media becomes increasingly intertwined with AI technology, it is crucial for platforms like Instagram to address concerns around the use of AI-generated content and its impact on human users.
