OpenAI and Reddit are teaming up in a deal that will bring the social media platform’s content to ChatGPT. Reddit shares surged more than 10% before the market opened on Friday following the announcement.
Partnership Details
According to a blog post by Reddit, the agreement will provide OpenAI with access to Reddit's data application programming interface (API). This API offers real-time, structured, and unique content from the platform. As part of the collaboration, Reddit users and moderators will also benefit from new artificial intelligence-powered features. Moreover, OpenAI will become a Reddit advertising partner.
API Access and Terms
Reddit clarified that the deal aligns with its existing content arrangements and does not alter its data API terms or developer terms. These terms stipulate that content accessed through Reddit’s API cannot be used for commercial purposes without approval from the platform. However, API access remains free for non-commercial usage below the specified threshold.
Reddit co-founder and CEO, Steve Huffman, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, "Reddit has become one of the internet’s largest open archives of authentic, relevant, and always up-to-date human conversations about anything and everything. Including it in ChatGPT upholds our belief in a connected internet, helps people find more of what they’re looking for, and helps new audiences find community on Reddit."
