Study finds AI tools like ChatGPT are popular among students who struggle with executive functions
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom continues to be a topic of discussion among educators striving to understand its impact and implement effective monitoring techniques. A study conducted by researchers at Lund University in Sweden delved into the perception of generative AI tools by adolescent students facing challenges with executive functions (EF) such as concentration and attention.
Insight from the Study
The research revealed that students experiencing difficulties with executive functions found AI tools, particularly ChatGPT, to be valuable aids in their schoolwork. These tools were especially helpful in completing assignments and navigating cognitive processes crucial for academic success. The study highlighted a correlation between students' preference for using AI tools and their struggles with planning, emotional regulation, and task completion.
Two studies were conducted as part of the research. The first study involved 385 students aged 12 to 16, while the second focused on 359 older students aged 15 to 19. The findings indicated that a significant percentage of students, especially older adolescents, utilized generative AI tools in their educational pursuits, with ChatGPT emerging as the most commonly used AI chatbot among students.
Benefits and Risks
According to the study, students grappling with challenges in schoolwork, such as planning and cognitive flexibility issues, found AI tools particularly beneficial for task completion. These tools served as compensatory aids, assisting students in breaking down complex tasks and overcoming planning difficulties.
However, the researchers cautioned against over-reliance on AI tools, emphasizing the importance of developing critical cognitive skills, especially during adolescence. Heavy dependence on AI to complete tasks without fostering existing abilities could impede the natural progression of cognitive skills essential for academic and life success.
